Fighting is raging in Kursk, Russia, after the Ukrainians suddenly attacked Russian territory, and in fact the developments are serious as the Russian administration has declared a state of emergency in the province, while the nuclear power plant is besieged by Ukrainian armored forces.
So the deputy governor of the Kursk region, Alexei Smirnov, declared the region a state of emergency.
Moscow announced earlier today that it was engaged in heavy fighting against Ukrainian forces who entered Russia’s Kursk region in the first incursion into Russian territory since the war in Ukraine began in February 2022.

Ukrainian forces advanced to the north, west of the border town of Sunja (which they hold), 530 km south-west of Moscow, as stated by the Russian Defense Ministry.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said the Russian military was still fighting Ukrainians in the Kursk region, right next to the Russia-Ukraine border.
“Air strikes, missile forces, artillery fire and actions of units covering the state border prevented the enemy from advancing deep into the territory of the Russian Federation,” it said.
The Russian Defense Ministry noted that fighting was continuing, adding that it had already destroyed 50 armored vehicles, including seven tanks, eight armored personnel carriers, three infantry fighting vehicles and 31 armored fighting vehicles.
Alexei Smirnov, the interim governor of Kursk Oblast, said there were rocket and drone attacks overnight, and called on citizens to protect themselves by staying away from windows.
“Due to the situation in the border regions of the region, medical services are replenishing blood supplies from donors,” Smirnov said, adding that a mobile blood donation point would be set up in Kursk, site of the world’s largest land battle during World War II.
